About Derrek

Since joining Abacus in 2007, Derrek has assumed increasing responsibility and earned the respect of clients and colleagues for his work in project management. He was recently named an owner and principal, the first of a new generation of leadership at the firm. Derrek combines a detailed analysis of client needs with a comprehensive knowledge of the building process to manage all phases of a project. Transforming an extraordinary amount of information into a built environment that accomplishes the client’s objectives is a driving force in Derrek’s approach to architecture.

On working with him

“I feel privileged to assist local business leaders, developers, and school districts in shaping their facilities to carry out their mission in the community.”

On his favorite project

“Many projects, but the most meaningful part of what I do is being part of a greater team accomplishing our common goal. That team includes not only members at Abacus, but also consultants, construction partners, and clients.”

On his own time

“Family time with my wife Laura and daughter Kate is the best part of each day. I’m also involved in various ways at Crossroads Community Church in Sheboygan. Hobbies include golf and distance running.”

On relational architecture

“It’s carrying out my role in assisting others with creating solutions to their architectural challenges, then seeing the results in built form in the community.”
