De Master Residence, Cedar Grove, Wisconsin
OVERVIEW
Wanting to live in the country and actually finding the right home on the right land are two different things. When Brian and Dawn De Master desired a country home, their search brought about disappointing results. Either it was the right setting and the house left a bit to be desired, or it was a nice home and the location was anything but.
When they finally stumbled across this piece of land, they just couldn’t pass it up. However, the existing home was not something they saw themselves living in. They hired Abacus Architects to help them create a home fitting for this serene spot. Fans of post & beam construction, the De Masters relayed their wish list to the team.
Thankfully, high ceilings were already part of the existing home’s design. Adding on to both the south and west sides of the structure, Abacus was able to retrofit the great room, master bedroom and exterior with non-structural Southern pine post & beam elements that look like they’ve been there from day one. The use of natural stone and quarter-sawn oak floors–laid throughout the home–adds an inviting and rustic charm to this now impressive country home.
