Since our beginning in 2003, we’ve implemented a number of innovations that distinguish our practice of architecture:

Specialized team members. Abacus brings together teams of staff members experienced in the various building types: senior living, education, residential, retail, corporate, and hospitality. The collaborative environment at Abacus encourages team members to cross-pollinate ideas. Through the team approach, clients gain the widespread knowledge of the whole firm, along with specialized expertise in their particular building type.

Project manager. A unique project management process at Abacus assures clients of a single point of contact from beginning to end. One project manager will guide clients through every phase to maintain continuity, serve as a liaison with subcontractors and vendors, and monitor the budget.

Technology. Abacus has invested in advanced technology to facilitate our process. The firm utilizes building design and construction software that enables Abacus personnel to model a project in 3-D, visualize design solutions and anticipate structural or other conflicts before they become problems. Multiple Abacus personnel can work simultaneously in the program, improving work flow and implementing changes automatically throughout the model. Overall, it gives both architects and clients a sophisticated tool for building quality into a project and meeting deadlines.

Quality control. Quality control at Abacus is a continuous system of checks and responsibilities to assure that clients receive the best product our firm offers. Employees at Abacus understand their individual responsibility for quality, yet know they can draw on the expertise of one of the firm’s principals as the quality control officer on every project.

INTERIOR DESIGN. Interior aesthetics is an important consideration in building design because it has a significant impact on how occupants perceive and utilize a structure. The team at Abacus Architects includes an on-staff interior designer who works directly with the design architect to develop a unified approach. Well-apprised of the latest interior products and technologies, our interior designer performs research on behalf of the client to ensure that the selections are the most appropriate for the project. When feasible, our interior designer also presents green and sustainable options. With an inside understanding of the project’s objectives from the beginning, our interior designer sees the creation of inside spaces all the way through to the implementation of colors, materials, and furnishings. Ultimately, the result is a cohesive plan that integrates intuitively with the overall building concept and design.

CIVIL ENGINEERING. The majority of architectural projects require civil engineering services to resolve site questions. Abacus Architects is one of a few architectural firms to offer in-house civil engineering as part of a total approach to planning and design. Unlike firms without this benefit, Abacus is able to initiate a detailed site investigation early in the process to ensure your project avoids costly revelations after your budget has been established. In-depth site investigation by our civil engineering department thoroughly examines how your site relates to adjacent public utilities, possible environmental concerns, adjacent properties, and potential storm-water issues. The ensuing design takes these factors into account and provides upfront solutions to help you minimize uncertainties and better manage total construction costs.

LEED DESIGN. More and more building owners are looking to their architects to provide them with solutions for conserving energy, reducing water consumption, improving indoor air quality and making better building material choices. Abacus Architects has three LEED Accredited Professionals on staff to offer clients innovative options for sustainable design practices and products.

LEED certification can present building owners with numerous advantages. In addition to producing energy savings, LEED buildings may qualify for incentives like tax rebates and zoning allowances. LEED certification can also add value to a project, making it more attractive to potential tenants or employees and positioning the owner as a forward-thinking company.

The LEED APs at Abacus can advise clients on every aspect of green design. For some, it may mean pursuit of full LEED certification. For others, it may involve selective incorporation of practices to save energy costs, have a positive impact on the environment, and protect the health of building occupants.
