Professional Credentials

Office management

As the office manager of a private school for 25 years, Barb has done everything from nursing to accounting to inventory control. Combine that with a marketing degree, being a stay-at-home mom for awhile, and experience in retail, and it’s apparent that Barb is well-equipped for the diverse responsibilities of keeping the Abacus books. Working with partner Joel Van Ess, Barb manages the firm’s accounting in QuickBooks, and handles job billings in conjunction with the individual architects. Barb says she likes to be organized, an invaluable quality for the architects and clients alike.

On working with her

“I am a detail-oriented person, so I like doing bookwork. It’s important to understand the job particulars, since each job is billed differently.”

On her favorite project

“They’re all equally challenging, which I like. They keep me mentally fit.”

On her own time

“My passion is gardening, and I hold a Master Gardener Certificate from the UW Extension. I volunteer with the Meals On Wheels garden in Sheboygan—the first in the country to grow much of our own food.”

On relational architecture

“Accounting and billing have to be done with honesty and transparency. That kind of integrity is the foundation of long-lasting relationships with clients.”
